Fat cells destroyed — not stored elsewhere
Deoxycholic acid destroys the fat cell membrane. The body processes and clears the cellular debris over weeks. Once destroyed, treated fat cells do not regenerate. Weight gain in untreated areas is still possible, but the treated submental fat cells are gone.
Significant swelling is expected and normal
48–72 hours post-treatment, swelling will be at its peak. This is normal and will subside over 2 weeks. It is not a complication — it is the treatment working. Numbness and firmness in the area are also common and temporary.
Asymmetry can occur and may require additional sessions
The human face is normally asymmetrical. There can be variation from one side to the other in terms of response to injection. Addressing this may require additional sessions to the same or nearby areas.

What to expect at every stage.
- Stop blood thinners 1 week before.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine 24 hours before.
- Arrive with a clean, bare face (SPF is okay).
- Inform your provider of any previous chin or neck surgery.
- Topical numbing cream applied for comfort. You'll numb for approximately 30 minutes for Kybella.
- A series of injections are placed beneath the chin using a grid-mapped approach for even coverage.
- Injections take 15–20 minutes. Most patients describe it as tolerable with numbing in place.
- 48–72 hours: maximum swelling. Sleep with your head slightly elevated on the day of treatment.
- 2–3 days: avoid NSAIDs and heavy salt intake to minimise swelling. Avoid exercise and excessive heat for 3–5 days.
- 2 weeks: swelling subsides. Numbness, firmness, and bruising may persist — these are temporary.
- 4–6 weeks: significant results become visible. Full effects assessed 8 weeks after completing the full course.

How it works
Deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells. The body clears them. They don't come back.
Kybella's active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid — a molecule that occurs naturally in the body to aid fat digestion. When injected into the submental fat layer, it disrupts the fat cell membrane, destroying the cell. The body's immune system then gradually clears the cellular debris over the following weeks.
Because the fat cells themselves are destroyed, the reduction is lasting — weight gain in untreated areas does not regenerate treated submental fat cells. However, maintaining a stable weight supports the outcome long-term.
