Hair Restoration with PRF

Your own concentrated growth factors, delivered where follicle health may be compromised. Gradual, natural improvement in the appearance of thinning hair.

  • PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) is derived from your own blood — concentrated growth factors that may support follicle health and improve the appearance of hair density.
  • No additives, no anti-coagulants. A second-generation autologous treatment that works with your body's own biology.
  • Results are gradual. A full series is recommended for meaningful improvement. Administered only by board-certified nurse practitioners.

WHY HAIR THINS

Why hair thins — and what PRF may address.

Hair loss and thinning have multiple causes — hormonal shifts (pregnancy, childbirth, hormonal medication changes), medications (including beta-blockers), dietary factors (crash dieting, low protein, iron deficiency), and stress or illness.

The hair growth cycle has three phases: Anagen (growth · 3–6 years), Catagen (regression · 2–4 weeks), and Telogen (resting · 3–5 months). PRF is delivered to the scalp during the Telogen phase to support follicle health and encourage the transition back to active growth. Results vary based on the cause of thinning and individual response.

Hormonal shifts

Pregnancy, childbirth, and changes to hormonal medication are among the most common triggers of temporary hair thinning in women. Fluctuating oestrogen and progesterone levels disrupt the hair growth cycle — pushing more follicles into the Telogen (resting) phase at once and accelerating shedding. PRF may support follicle health during this phase as the scalp environment restabilises.

Medication effects

Beta-blockers and certain other medications can trigger a disrupted growth cycle, resulting in increased shedding. If medication is the primary driver, your provider will assess whether PRF is appropriate alongside any medical management.

Diet & nutritional factors

Crash dieting, low protein intake, and chronic iron deficiency can all result in hair shedding — the follicle deprioritises hair growth when the body is under nutritional stress. Where a dietary cause is suspected, your provider may recommend addressing the underlying deficiency before or alongside treatment.

Stress, illness & other factors

Psychological stress, surgery, illness, scalp conditions, and thyroid dysfunction can all contribute to thinning. These causes often manifest as diffuse shedding 2–4 months after the triggering event — a pattern known as telogen effluvium. PRF may support scalp health as the system recovers, though addressing the underlying cause is always the first priority.

Why it works for you

Matched to your concern. Not a generic formula.

PRF works with your own biology to support follicle health at the scalp level. What we treat, and what we don't, is assessed at consultation.

Ideal For

  • Diffuse thinning (overall density loss)
  • Post-partum hair shedding
  • Hormone or stress-related thinning
  • Patients wanting a fully autologous approach

Does Not Treat

  • Complete hair loss (alopecia totalis) — requires specialist referral
  • Scarring alopecia — requires specialist referral
  • Male pattern baldness at advanced stages — discuss at consultation
  • Hairline restoration — not the primary focus of PRF treatment

Your own biology — nothing added, nothing foreign

PRF is derived entirely from your own blood. Unlike PRP, the second-generation PRF concentrate contains no anti-coagulants and no additives — which means a more complete, sustained release of growth factors once delivered. Your body has already accepted it. The process concentrates what was already there and puts it where it can do the most work.

A series, not a single session

PRF results are gradual by design — the growth factors work over weeks as the follicle cycles. Most patients complete 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with meaningful improvement visible at 3–6 months. Patients who commit to a full series consistently see better outcomes than those who treat sporadically. Your provider builds the right cadence at consultation based on your cause of thinning and how your scalp responds.

Cause determines outcome — which is why we assess first

Not all thinning responds equally to PRF. Hormonal shedding, post-partum thinning, and stress-related telogen effluvium tend to respond well. Advanced pattern hair loss or scarring alopecia are outside the scope of what PRF can meaningfully address. At The Skin Clinic, your provider assesses the likely cause before recommending a protocol — so you go in with realistic expectations, not optimistic ones.

Your Treatment Journey

What to expect at every stage.

  • Stop blood thinners, aspirin, and fish oil 1 week before.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine 24 hours before.
  • Hydrate well — 2 litres of water per day. Have a light meal before your appointment.
  • Inform your provider of any active infections, recent illness, or autoimmune conditions.
  • A small blood sample is drawn and processed in a centrifuge to isolate PRF.
  • PRF is injected into the scalp across the thinning area.
  • The full appointment takes approximately 1 hour including blood draw.
  • Mild scalp tenderness and redness for 1–3 days is expected.
  • Avoid shampoo and hair products for 6 hours post-treatment.
  • Avoid sweating, exercise, and sun exposure for 24 hours.
  • Washing hair: avoid for 24 hours minimum (48 hours is better).

How it works

Your own growth factors, delivered to the scalp.

PRF is derived entirely from your own blood. The process concentrates your platelet-rich fibrin — which contains growth factors that may support follicle health when delivered directly to the scalp. No additives, no anti-coagulants.

01

Blood Draw

A small blood sample is drawn. Inform your provider of any history of complications during blood draws.

02

Centrifuge

Your blood is spun to isolate the platelet-rich fibrin. Unlike PRP, no anti-coagulants are added — allowing the full benefit of the fibrin matrix.

03

Scalp Injection

PRF is injected into the scalp across the areas of thinning. Growth factors are released gradually over the following days and weeks, where they may support follicle health and encourage improved hair density.

Questions & Answers

What patients ask before they book.

How is PRF different from PRP?

PRF is a second-generation concentrate. Unlike PRP, it contains no anti-coagulants, which allows for a more complete release of growth factors over time. The fibrin matrix also supports a sustained release rather than an immediate burst.

How many sessions do I need?

Results build over a series. Most patients complete 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. A consultation helps establish the right plan based on your cause of thinning and response to treatment.

How long before I see results?

PRF results are gradual. Most patients notice improvement in hair appearance at 3–6 months with a consistent series. Individual results vary.

Can it be combined with KeraLase™?

Yes. KeraLase™ uses the LaseMD laser to prepare the scalp before delivering the KeraFactor serum, while PRF injects growth factors directly. Your provider can recommend the right combination for your goals.

Is this a cure for hair loss?

No. PRF may support follicle health and improve the appearance of thinning hair. It is not a cure for hair loss conditions such as alopecia. Individual results vary and are assessed at consultation.
